Preparing for your engagement session and want to know how to make the most out of it? There are SO many blogs you can read, friends who will gladly share their opinions. But why not hear it straight from an experienced professional! My best engagement session tips and tricks are below!
1. Professional Hair and Makeup
If there is one thing I can recommend to do for your engagement session that is a solid confidence booster—its this!
I recently had new headshots taken and I thought, why not pamper myself and schedule a blowout for hair and makeup! With a blowout, it still looked like me— but an elevated ‘me’!!
The lashes and eye makeup enhanced my images, making me feel SO much more confident in front of the camera! I highly recommend this! Give the Blowout Bar a try!
2. Dress Up
My most asked question— what should we wear? If there is JUST one tip I have for you to instantly enhance your engagement session photos, it is this…dress up! You will never regret it!
This is a ONCE in a lifetime opportunity! There are so many reasons to dress up. Not only are dresses and skirts so flattering to the body but they also add an essence of romance!
Dresses create a sense of movement to your imagery and will make walking shots, etc. that much more flattering! My brides usually bring two dresses, a longer flowy dress for a dressier look and then a cocktail or midi length dress for a different look or more casual look.
You can never go wrong with a timeless palette, think light neutral colors like cream, taupe, camel or light gray, shades of soft pinks, muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light-colored neutrals. The softer palette fits beautifully into all natural outdoor environments.
3. Set the Scene…Location, location, location!
A destination engagement session perhaps? Why not!
If you have the ability to, pick a place that inspires you—dream big! Go somewhere you have always wanted to, even if you’ve never been before!
Why not make these shots epic! This is your opportunity to create something amazing and memorable for yourselves all while having it documented by the same story teller and artist who will capture your wedding!
If you are considering traveling for your engagement session, reach out to me in advance— I love to travel and I’d be honored to document your love in a place that is meaningful to you!
4. Mindset
The purpose of the engagement images is to celebrate your engagement and document your relationship! Sometimes couples can get caught up in the idea that an engagement session is for their “save-the-dates.” They end up picking winter or a season or location they aren’t fully in love with— just to get the images done quickly for their save-the-dates!
If you stop and think about it, when have you ever or will you ever dedicate a full photo session to just the two of you? Likely never. Wedding day will be over in a flash, you will have an entire day captured in your wedding attire.
This session…the engagement session is different. This is a celebration of your engagement– that special season of your life. It is a full session dedicated to capturing and documenting your romance and relationship. Don’t do it for a save-the-date…do it because the location, season etc. matches your vision.
5. Uniqueness
If you want to add some uniqueness, to make this session special, try adding a beautiful floral bouquet with a long silk ribbon! Bring some wine! Or even write each other letters to read to each other! This session is for YOU and is to document YOUR love.
Whatever feels like you! I just want you to be you! If you are the quiet and reserved couple, I want you to be just that! If you are the outgoing and friendly couple, you should be that! Your photos should tell the story of who you are as a couple!
